Program Courses

Orientation and Student Success Skills
This course will provide a comprehensive orientation to Stenberg College and the program you have enrolled in. As with all new things, there will be some challenges to overcome; however, with this course, you will become familiar with your new environment and the resources available for your use. You will gain effective learning and study strategies; become familiar with course and research online resources; enhance reading and writing skills; participate in activities to increase self-awareness, communication, and accountability; and develop teamwork skills.

Keyboarding / Computer Fundamentals
This course is designed to introduce students to the Windows environment, the features of Microsoft Word and typing programs. You will learn how to manage files and folders as well as how to produce a variety of documents in Word. You値l also focus on the development and maintenance of accurate keyboarding skills and work to achieve the typing benchmarks set for the program.

Medical Terminology
This intensive, fast paced course is an introduction to the world of medical terminology and is designed to provide the foundation for all subsequent courses. You値l become familiar with various medical word parts, become fluent in the pronunciation and spelling of these parts, and become proficient with the building and breaking down of medical terms to determine meaning. It痴 essential for all healthcare professionals to be able to function effectively and safely in a medical environment; therefore, you must be competent and accurate in the use of medical terminology on the job.

Anatomy/Physiology/Pathology
This course will cover body systems and sense organs. Teaching about each system will include: an overview of that system痴 general function; system parts, their specific function and location; relationship with other systems; and common pathologies including lab and diagnostic tests, signs and symptoms and prognosis of those pathologies.

Hospital Unit Communications
You値l identify and learn how to use all communication devices in an acute care hospital, exploring principles of communication and engaging in skill practice. Patient confidentiality will be emphasized.

Admissions/Transfers/Discharges
You値l learn the skills and knowledge necessary to compile and maintain a patient's chart, and to understand the legal and ethical guidelines that influence its use. You値l understand and practice procedures for performing and managing patient admissions, transfers, and discharges in an acute care hospital setting.

Pharmacology
This course will introduce you to pharmaceutical terms and regulations that govern the drug industry. You値l gain the knowledge necessary to communicate information between patients, pharmacists and physicians. Emphasis is on the classifications, spelling, and pronunciation of the most commonly ordered prescription medications. The study of related abbreviations, symbols, routes of administration and systems of measurement used in prescriptions will also be discussed.

Medication Order Transcription
In this course you will develop skills focusing on the knowledge and practice of procedures required to process orders for medications, intravascular therapy, and total parenteral nutrition in an acute care hospital setting.

Lab Order Transcription
You値l gain extensive knowledge of frequently ordered laboratory tests. You値l also learn the fundamentals of lab order processing and will be able to identify the requisitions needed to request a broad number of laboratory tests, as well as any additional information needed for the correct completion of various tests.

Surgical Order Transcription
This course will provide you with the skills necessary to process surgical orders in an acute care hospital setting. You値l also gain knowledge of a variety of surgical orders. Emphasis will be on preparing the patient chart for the operating room and completing post-operative orders accurately and in a timely manner.

Diagnostic Order Transcription
In this course you値l build your skill in diagnostic order transcription. You will come to understand the processes, perform the procedures, and fulfill the orders that go to diagnostic imaging, X-ray, CAT scan, and ultrasound. You値l be able to identify what needs to be done to prepare a patient for a variety of tests, and which tests require a consent form.

Career Search Strategies
This course is offered in a combined online and classroom delivery format. In the guided online sessions, students learn to network effectively, prepare targeted resumes and cover letters, and follow up in their job search. In the instructor-led session, students are provided with a personalized critique of their resume, cover letter, and online profiles and are also given the opportunity to practice and perfect interview skills.

Practicum
To have an opportunity to practice the skills learned in the Nursing Unit Clerk classroom, and to further develop and master those skills, you will participate in a practicum within a health authority hospital unit. This practicum will provide you with experiences that will refine your skills to the level of competency required to work in an acute care hospital setting.

Program Review
This module begins with a post-practicum debriefing and discussion of individual student experiences. It will also focus on skills to prepare students for job interviews and employment testing by reviewing medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, order transcription theory and abbreviations.

CPR/HCP/AED
You値l receive Red Cross First Aid Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Health Care Provider (HCP) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). This industry standard certification is valid for three years.

Personal & Professional Development Skills Certificate
Responding carefully to the needs of today痴 employers, a series of Personal and Professional Development Workshops have been integrated throughout the program to develop critical thinking and soft skills.
