RN Qualifying Courses for Nurses Seeking Registration with the CRNBCQualifying Course In Adult Medical and Surgical NursingTheory Courses The qualifying course offers theoretical and practical experience in a variety of formats and supported by clinical placements. Theory courses are conducted by a mixture of distance learning and individual tutoring modes. These aspects are dependent on individual needs, the requirements outlined in the letter of assessment (for nurses new to BC) from CRNBC Regulatory Services, and numbers of students registered in the course at any given time. Invariably, the course starts with 30 hours of classroom work. The total theory hours amount to 200. Assignments are completed at various points in each part of the module and forwarded to the instructor/tutor for feedback and grading. Students must achieve a pass in each assignment (based on the preset individual criteria) and an overall pass in the module. The pass mark will be set at 70%. Students will have three opportunities to obtain passing grades in each assignment. After the initial classroom hours, theory modules are integrated with clinical practice and can be completed concurrently. Clinical Experiences Clinical placements are subject to availability and the exigencies of the service, as well as student location. Students are supervised by Instructors and Registered Nurses on site. The Instructor/Tutor will be available by phone, pager or cell phone at all times, but particularly when the student is working under the supervision of an RN on the Unit. Students complete up to 150 hours of clinical experience in each area - medical nursing and surgical nursing - which may be extended to facilitate learning or successful completion of course objectives. Student assessment/evaluation will be conducted by the student, RN supervisor and Instructor in collaboration. Psychomotor skills may be assessed in the clinical practice area and/or in a laboratory situation. Students have up to six months to complete this course. *This course can be completed outside Canada. Qualifying Course In Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Theory Courses The qualifying course offers theoretical and practical experience in a variety of formats and clinical placements. Theory courses are conducted by both distance learning and classroom/individual tutoring modes. These aspects are dependent on individual needs and numbers of students registered in the course at any given time. Assignments are completed at various points in each part of the module and forwarded to the consultant/tutor for feedback and grading. Students must achieve a pass in each assignment (based on the preset individual criteria) and an overall pass in the module. The pass mark will be set at 70%. Students will have three opportunities to obtain passing grades in each assignment. There may be a short exam at the end of the course. Clinical Experiences Clinical placements are subject to availability and the exigencies of the service, as well as student location and interests. Students are supervised by Registered Nurses on site and will have frequent visits from the consultant/tutor, who will be available by pager at all times. Students complete 96 hours of clinical experience, which may be extended to facilitate learning or successful completion of course objectives. Student assessment/evaluation will be conducted by the student, RN supervisor and consultant in collaboration. Psychomotor skills may be assessed in the clinical practice area and/or in a laboratory situation. *This course can be completed outside Canada. Qualifying Course In Obstetric (Maternal/Newborn) Nursing Theory Courses The qualifying course offers theoretical and practical experience in a variety of formats and supported by clinical placements. These aspects are dependent on individual needs, the requirements outlined in the letter of assessment from CRNBC Regulatory Services, and numbers of students registered in the course at any given time. Students must achieve a pass in each assignment (based on the preset individual criteria) and an overall pass in the module. The pass mark will be set at 70%. Qualifying Course in Pediatric (Children's) Nursing Theory Courses The qualifying course offers theoretical and practical experience in a variety of formats and clinical placements. Theory courses are conducted by both distance learning and classroom/individual tutoring modes. These aspects are dependent on individual needs and numbers of students registered in the course at any given time, as well as their geographical location. Assignments are completed at various points in each part of the module and forwarded to the consultant/tutor for feedback and grading. Students must achieve a pass in each assignment (based on the preset individual criteria) and an overall pass in the module. The pass mark will be set at 70%. Students will have three opportunities to obtain passing grades in each assignment. There will be a short exam at the end of the course. Theory courses, generally, amount to 125 hours in total. Clinical Experiences Clinical placements are subject to availability and the exigencies of the service, as well as student location and interests.
