Medical Laboratory Assistant Overview Having completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant program at Stenberg College, graduates will be fully prepared to start their career in either public or private laboratory facilities. Medical laboratory assistants are clinical support staff. They perform work that helps doctors diagnose and treat diseases. Our curriculum exceeds the British Columbia Society of Laboratory Science standards in a number of areas and includes such topics as medical and legal ethics, anatomy and physiology, asepsis, blood collection, haematology and pathology. Sample Careers and Job Duties A medical laboratory assistant can perform a wide variety of tasks, depending upon the needs of the institute that is doing the testing. Some sample duties are the following: Collect blood Operate laboratory equipment and ensure it is in good working order Handle a variety of biological substances, such as blood, body fluids and swabs and tissues.
