Last Part of the Health Care Assistant Practicum and Program Wrap Up

Well its coming to an end – I have two days left of my 2nd practicum as Health Care Assistant and I am officially done school 🙂

For the past week and a half I have been working at an assisted living facility. The difference between this facility and the last one I was at is mostly the residents, they are able to do most things on their own.

A job as a care aide at this place consists of helping with medication, cleaning residents rooms, assisting with showers and day to day tasks that the resident may not be able to do on their own. You also help during lunch and dinner by helping serve the residents their dinner in the big dining room.

The difference between the 2 facilities is drastic, my 1st Health Care Assistant practicum site the residents that I worked with were fully dependent on your care and the residents at this facility don’t need a lot of care. They get their own rooms that have a bathroom, living room, kitchen with no stove or oven – they are nice suites. The feel of this facility is almost like a town inside, they have a store to purchase things, a hair salon, a library, a movie theatre and a little bistro where they can get coffee and breakfast in the morning.

I’m happy that I’ve gotten to experience a little bit of each so I get a better understanding of the different kinds of facilities and the different kinds of residents I may be working with. I can’t believe that school is going to be over, the last 7.5 months feel like they went by in the blink of an eye.

My classmate and myself all went through so much during school and at times it was so intense none of us could see the end, but we made it! We all busted our butts to get to where we are and now all of our hard work has paid off.

I am so happy that the place I did my practicum at offered me a job, that takes such a big stress off me knowing that I already have a job lined up. I know it will be casual wherever I go but at least I am going to have my foot in the door and can start working right away.

We have one last meeting at school that is for all us all to celebrate with each other and we also get our Care Aide Registry Numbers – you need that in order to be able to work as a Care Aide. I am so happy that I made the decision to go back to school and better my future. I now have a career that I get to begin and I can’t wait to see where it takes me. I am so thankful for all the help and support I received along the way from all my instructors and staff at Stenberg, my classmates and my friends and family. I can’t wait to start this new chapter of my life 🙂

Thank you for everyone the read my blogs and I hope you all enjoyed them!
