Meet Sheetal & The Reality Behind a Health Care Assistant

Hello, beautiful world!

Sheetal loves helping and caring for others. That steered her to health care & social work, finally leading her to be an HCA.My name is Sheetal and I am a student in Stenberg’s Health Care Assistant (HCA) program. I have a heart for service and a strong passion for volunteering, health care and social work. In addition to being an HCA student, I’m also a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend, granddaughter, pet-lover, postal worker, volunteer, brand ambassador and now officially a student blogger!

I am just an ordinary girl who enjoys the simplicity of life. I have always been interested in helping and caring for others. I am also the type of person who focuses on a positive outlook and enjoys making others laugh to make the most out of their day.

My journey as a Health Care Assistant

When I first started the program, there were a few adjustments I needed to make. One of which was adjusting to the class schedule. On paper, my schedule for evening classes was Monday to Friday from 5-10 p.m. 10 PM? Like what? Did I hear that right? I was used to attending classes in the morning. So, the shift from having my classes in the morning to evening was overall a new experience.

Health Care Assistants promote both quality and continuity of care for our clients. This is a challenging, physically demanding, yet rewarding career to consider. It’s one of those professions which requires a variety of hands-on, time management, and great people skills for continuous interaction with residents. If you’re wondering if this program is right for you, I highly recommend self-reflecting, acknowledging your personal triggers, and ensuring you have patience because you will be dealing with such a wide spectrum of unique individuals.

The reality is that no two shifts are going to be alike, and critical thinking is a MUST-have skill to acquire over time. On shift, our every move needs to be purposeful and for the well-being of our clients.

In terms of overall course content, I recently began learning about dementia and Alzheimer’s and we’ve progressed deeper towards learning about personalities and mental disorders. This program also emphasizes the importance of team building, group projects, and in-class presentations as well.

Beyond Stenberg College

Outside of school, I have been actively involved in the community with various health care and social work organizations such as the Healthy Living Youth Council, further coordinated with the Directorate Agencies for School of Health BC (DASHBC), Girl Warrior Productions, YMCA of Greater Vancouver, The KidSafe Project Society, Family Respite Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health, and Carrot Rewards as a Student Brand Ambassador.

Side note: I have always enjoyed writing and freely expressing myself. I believe it’s a great way to self-reflect as it promotes self-awareness. As a student blogger, I look forward sharing with you all a glimpse of my school life.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Thank you. 🙂
