Twelve weeks in and four instructors later and we are still here!
As with any other school we have had different instructors for each course we are given. Each one has had their own specialty and approach to how they communicate and teach us, however there is one in particular who has cemented a place in my mind. We first met her roughly six weeks ago as we were finishing up our previous communications course, and let me just tell you I was unsure and overwhelmed. Unsure of how she would be as a teacher, with her outspoken and straight to the point approach, and overwhelmed with whether or not we would “mesh” well with her as we all have done with our other instructors.
About five weeks ago she became our full time teacher, now notice how I switched to the term teacher and not instructor, this is because she has not just stood in front of us and taught us what is required of her.
She has already made an impact in my life as a person, she is literally teaching us how to be what we are here and trained to be, which is Hospital Support Specialists.
The woman I am talking about is Dr. Harminder Mathur.
She is more than an instructor at Stenberg. So far for us, she has been a driving force in why I think we are here and why we are doing so well. Don’t get me wrong she is firm, she is outspoken and she is not your typical stand in front of the class and preach what’s inside the book. With all this said she is also considerate, passionate and an incredible teacher, of the program and life in general.
Through her teachings she incorporates in personal experiences that are relatable to what we are learning; this is what makes some of the info “stick” for us. Her knowledge of what we need to know is mind blowing, but she will also be the first to remind us that “you are not even dipping the tip of your fingernail into becoming doctors or nurses, so focus on what’s in front of you, and don’t try to become what you are not here for, now come darlings, back to work.” The phrase sounds harsh and sometimes it is, but her tone and the way she comes across is that we need to focus on what we are here for and give it 110% or you might as well not be here at all.
She is one of the most firm, this is what I want done; now do it type people I have met, and although we were all hesitant at first, I’m pretty sure I can speak for all of us when I say, we wouldn’t have it any other way. With the amazing stuff she has taught us so far, and with what is still to come I am very excited to see what else she has in store for us.
Thank you Harminder for being you and not “bending”, or “conforming” to what kind of a person you think we would have wanted.
Also one more thanks goes out to her for showing us that just because you are structured, firm and strict, does not mean that you are rude or entitled. It means that somehow this particular person has harnessed just the right amount of exactly what a teacher should be.
