Nerves and Excitement Before My Nursing Unit Clerk Practicum

I officially have only 18 days of class left! And then I am off to practicum. I am definitely getting extremely nervous now. We just finished our second to last module and will be starting our last module on Nov 30th. Time flew by so fast, I didn’t even realize I am so close to graduating. It will  be nice not having to wake up at 6 am to go to school anymore, but I will miss my class! My cohort is great. Our instructor (Wendy Scott) has been our instructor for almost every module except for the introduction week and computer fundamentals.  Having been a Nursing Unit Clerk for over 12 years, Wendy has so much experience and knowledge to share with the class. There is 14 of us in the class, all females. We started off with a few more, but for various different reasons they could not pursue this program anymore. It is nice to have a small class, we all know each other and are extremely comfortable with one another.

So far, I’ve done better than I had expected to do in all the modules and I am so happy about that. It really helps having a small class and the same instructor for most of the program.  I am really enjoying the program, and everything that we learn. We have learned communications,  anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and for the last few months we have been learning how to transcribe the different types of physician’s orders (which is a fundamental part of a Nursing Unit Clerk’s job). We have also gotten the chance to learn about Fraser Health’s computer system and program by going to labs once a month, which is a really good way to apply what we’ve been learning in class. My biggest worry at the moment is practicum. It is fast approaching, and we have been preparing for it which is making me somewhat nervous. It will however be a great learning experience. For the Unit Clerk program we get 2 practicums; each is 3 weeks long. Our practicums start in January which means sometime next month we will be finding out our placements.

Apart from my unnecessary worrying about practicum, everything inside the classroom has been just great. We get one week off now in lieu of an online class we had to do for Career Strategies! A much needed week off, I should say. In this week we do have to do mock interviews which I am actually quite excited to do. Then when we go back to class next week we begin our final module before Christmas break. Everything is happening so fast. November is almost over and December is our last month at Stenberg.  It has been great so far and I am looking forward to what the next few months have to bring.
