True Story: I changed me with Therapeutic Recreation

It was a day like any other. I was a little fed up with the same old routine and found myself wondering what else might be out there. I was stopped at a red light behind a big blue bus and there I saw, staring back at me, a large advertisement for Stenberg College. The tagline read: “I Changed Me.”

In that moment, I knew that if I wanted anything to change, I would have to initiate it. But going back to school? At my age? I was 50. How would I possibly make THAT work?

Coincidentally, my sister-in-law sent me a link to a free Information Session at Stenberg College a few days later for a program called Therapeutic Recreation. By this point, I knew that in my new career, whatever it may be, I wanted to help others.

I was free next Thursday so I went to the session. “I have nothing to lose,” I thought. “Maybe I’ll just go for the refreshments.” I had no expectations.

The best gift is you! Ken decided to make the changes, roll the bones and try out a new career at 50 years of age. After listening to current instructors and grads who had gone through the program, I had a feeling that this might actually work. I could keep working part-time because I wouldn’t have to commute to a classroom every day. I could do this remotely and study when I wanted when I had time. I walked away that night with a positive feeling about Stenberg, the program, and the possibility of a new direction.

I’m not a gambler, but I liked my odds. So, I rolled the bones, went for it, and it worked out better than I had expected. Without sounding too dramatic, I can honestly say I went through some life-changing moments while attending Stenberg. I changed me. I learned more about how to set goals and actually succeed in school than I had in all my years of high school, college and tech school. I had a great orientation instructor who gave us a roadmap on getting organized and getting the most out of school. There was so much help available.

Discovering the program was delivered mostly online was also a turning point for me. I could certainly navigate my way online, and I saw great advantages for not having to be in a classroom all day. Personally, commuting to a classroom every day simply was not going to work for me. I was able to rearrange my work schedule and study at my convenience. I loved the flexibility. I was able to attend a friend’s destination wedding and not miss any classes. I viewed video presentations online, did my reading on my laptop sitting beside the pool and took an exam in the hotel lobby.

Fate is just the weight of circumstances

As a Therapeutic Recreation Manager, I can tell you that Stenberg grads are very well prepared to walk right into that first job. They have all the certificates and credentials needed, so the hiring department doesn’t have to wait until all the paperwork is complete. That’s why so many get hired right after practicum, or in some cases, before their practicum is even completed.
