This course will provide a comprehensive orientation to Stenberg College and the Nursing Unit Clerk program in which you are enrolled. As with all new things, there will be some challenges and excitement; this course, will explore transitioning as a college student, review learning styles, enhance critical thinking, and will familiarize you with the resources available for your use. Your will cover student success skills, learning effective study habits, based on your own personal learning style, while improving both reading and writing skills. Life skills exercises are also integral to the course, teaching communication, accountability, teamwork, self-awareness and building an understanding of the impact you have on others.
This course is designed to provide you with a detailed introduction to correct typing technique and the computer skills required to work in a fast-paced environment. Throughout the course, you will use a simulated program to improve proficiency with the Internet, Windows environment, and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). You will also focus on the development and maintenance of accurate keyboarding skills and work to maintain the minimum typing requirement set by the program.
This intensive, fast paced course is an introduction to the world of medical terminology and is designed to provide the foundation for all subsequent courses. You’ll become familiar with various medical word parts, become fluent in the pronunciation and spelling of these parts, and become proficient with the building and breaking down of medical terms to determine meaning. It’s essential for all healthcare professionals to be able to function effectively and safely in a medical environment; therefore, you must be competent and accurate in the use of medical terminology on the job. You will then move on to cover body systems and sense organs. Teaching about each system will include: an overview of that system’s general function; system parts, their specific function and location; relationship with other systems; and common pathologies including lab and diagnostic tests, signs and symptoms and prognosis of those pathologies.
You’ll identify and learn how to use all communication devices in an acute care hospital, exploring principles of communication and engaging in skill practice. Patient confidentiality will be emphasized.
You’ll learn the skills and knowledge necessary to compile and maintain a patient’s chart, and to understand the legal and ethical guidelines that influence its use. You’ll understand and practice procedures for performing and managing patient admissions, transfers, and discharges in an acute care hospital setting.
This course will introduce you to pharmaceutical terms and regulations that govern the drug industry. You’ll gain the knowledge necessary to communicate information between patients, pharmacists and physicians. Emphasis is on the classifications, spelling, and pronunciation of the most commonly ordered prescription medications. The study of related abbreviations, symbols, routes of administration and systems of measurement used in prescriptions will also be discussed.
In this course you will develop skills focusing on the knowledge and practice of procedures required to process orders for medications, intravascular therapy, and total parenteral nutrition in an acute care hospital setting.
You’ll gain extensive knowledge of frequently ordered laboratory tests. You’ll also learn the fundamentals of lab order processing and will be able to identify the requisitions needed to request a broad number of laboratory tests, as well as any additional information needed for the correct completion of various tests.
This course will provide you with the skills necessary to process surgical orders in an acute care hospital setting. You’ll also gain knowledge of a variety of surgical orders. Emphasis will be on preparing the patient chart for the operating room and completing post-operative orders accurately and in a timely manner.
In this course you’ll build your skill in diagnostic order transcription. You will come to understand the processes, perform the procedures, and fulfill the orders that go to diagnostic imaging, X-ray, CAT scan, and ultrasound. You’ll be able to identify what needs to be done to prepare a patient for a variety of tests, and which tests require a consent form.
This course is offered in combined online and classroom delivery format. Students learn to network effectively (online and in person), to search and apply for jobs and to prepare targeted resumes and cover letters. Students are also provided with coaching and individualized instructor feedback on their resume, cover letter and interview skills.
In this course you will have an opportunity to practice the skills learned in the Nursing Unit Clerk classroom, and to further develop and master those skills, you will participate in a practice experience within one or more health authority hospital units. This practicum will provide you with experiences that will refine your skills to the level of competency required to work in an acute care hospital setting.<
This module begins with a post-practicum debriefing and discussion of individual student experiences. It will also focus on skills to prepare students for job interviews and employment testing by reviewing medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, order transcription theory and abbreviations.
WHMIS provides information about materials in the workplace that can be hazardous, such as cleaning agents, compressed gases and flammable materials. Becoming WHMIS certified will demonstrate the ability to identify hazardous materials and handle them properly.
The Personal and Professional Development (PPD) Skills Certificate is a self-directed, online certificate that enhances students’ soft skills. The six PPD workshops cover Professionalism, Quality Service, Feedback, Diverse Teams, Conflict Resolution and Leadership. Together, these workshops prepare students to effectively approach and resolve real life situations.
